The upstairs was originally designed as a multi-purpose open space. The walls, ceiling, and floors were all wood. At some point the entire upstaris was converted into an apartment. The kitchy decor we found upon purchase says 1950's with a groovy update in the 1970's complete with shag carpet and a liquor bar!
Upon commencement of gutting the upstairs, we discovered all the internal walls were put up with solid wood panelling...not the 1970's crap we GenX grew up with...but solid cherry, maple & birch! And we found hardwood floors under the groovy shag & walls covered in wallpaper put up on said hardwood panelling.
Instead of our original plan to put up gypsum & paint, we reused the wood panelling, exposed the pine ceiling & walls in the common area, and left the hardwood as is.
Today, it has a rustic woodly feel! Theming includes a "backpacker museum" of old equipment, Upper Peninsula wildife & history of the Germfask station on the Manistique Railroad!
We also use the space for our resale operation. So, anything you see is probably for sale!
